I’ve only owned this unit for about 1 week but I have no complaints. It’s a solid product and it comes with a larger than normal user manual that you may want to refrence often. There are great features, one of the nicest is the ability to get about 8 hours of footage on to one blank DVD. The quality drops off sharply (I have a flat screen TV so its more apparent), but on the higher quality recordings it’s beautiful.

I purchased this around a month ago and hooked it up to my 52” Phillips 1080 LCD thru the HDMI and it is AWESOME! The upconverting is flawless and quick and looks super sweet on my HD display. Makes a reg 420 DVD look nearly HD! ALos I have over 500 Divx movies backed up on DVD-R and they play flawlessly on this player. Menu is easy to use and the recorder works great as well! This is a must have for any home theater system and you just cant beat the price!

After looking for a month for a ATSC enabled dvd recorder I found the Toshiba DR-550. First off, this recorder has a real ATSC tuner instead of one of those rediculous SDTV tuners that the feds are trying to get you to buy. With a real ATSC tuner, you will be getting the best digital experience with an over-the-air antenna, instead of a 480p signal retread (not cool). Second, I wanted something easy to record digital TV and my Mini DVs and so far so great. I loaded a TDK dvd R- and the thing recorded beautifully from the digital antenna feed I got going in. I just pressed record and it started recording and the dvd looks great on playback. Next up is backing up my billions of Mini DVs and if my first experience was any indicator, I will be very pleased. Ultimately, if you need an ATSC tuner and want to get the benefits of a recorder, try out the DR-550. At $129, it is almost a steal.

Very easy to use dvd recorder. We had tried another brand and sent it back because it was too hard to figure out, this one was very easy. The quality is excellent and very satisfied. Have not used the HDMI or HD features but the rest is great.

The QAM tuner on this product does NOT work, which is the whole reason i am buying it and returning it.
