Get the sharpest and clearest images possible from HD and standard TV and your favorite DVD movies with the 56-inch Toshiba 56HM66 DLP rear-projection television, which offers a 720p progressive resolution. This set is loaded with the latest in video and audio processing technology as well as loaded with a wide variety of connectivity options. The set’s built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner pulls HD signals (480p/720p/1080i) right from the airwaves, and its QAM tuner is fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception. The CableCARD port means the set will also receive digital cable television systems services directly from a compatible cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box. A standard analog NTSC tuner receives standard-definition (SD) programming.

DLP (which stands for Digital Light Processing) uses an optical semiconductor to recreate source material with a fidelity analog systems can’t match. While other technologies lose a certain amount of light in transit, the microscopic mirrors in a DLP projection system bring more light from lamp to screen. It also features better color uniformity over time–no burn-in, screen aging or color-shifting possible. It’s the leading display technology for products like small portable conference room projectors and professional venue entertainment systems.

This DLP set utilizes Toshiba’s new TALEN 5 engine, which incorporates the Texas Instruments HD5 DLP chip and new Brilliant Color 2 technology. It also offers the new high-speed PixelPure 14-Bit video processing, which operates at 333 MHz and provides true 12-bit processing for more natural images. In addition to its high bit rate, PixelPure 12-bit also features new real speed progressive scanning, increased dynamic range, increased sharpness, improved video noise reduction, and dynamic gamma for uncompromised picture quality. The Radiance 150 Hi-Bright lamp is 25 percent brighter for increased brightness without losing contrast.

The 56HM66 set features Toshiba’s CableClear DNR+ technology, which optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable sources to eliminate video noise ("snow") for a clean crisp image. It utilizes the digital 3D/YC comb filter to compare frames and determine the existence and extent of video noise. It then applies the needed amount of digital video noise reduction, and the appropriate sharpness adjustment to keep the picture clear. This feature now works on RF, composite and S-Video inputs, and can be selected by input.

The aforementioned 3D Y/C comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the color from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, resulting in a razor sharp image. The Cinema Mode feature performs 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal, too–a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. To adapt 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video, frames in the original movie must be duplicated; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this duplication by removing the redundant information to display a frame-accurate picture. This set also offers five TheaterWide modes that expand letterboxed images–which is particularly useful when watching narrow letterboxed Panavision or CinemaScope films.

The HD Window POP feature can accept 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals, and can even display 4:3 and 16:9 images on the screen at the same time. The split screen function allows you to increase or decrease the size of the POP boxes, making one larger than the other. It enables you to continue to view the main picture in a large POP box while viewing Favorite Channels, or channel scanning in the other smaller POP boxes. The Movie Mode feature changes the basic picture setup conditions to create a more theater-like picture, while the Sports Mode feature automatically adjusts appropriate picture levels to produce enhanced color, detail and brightness. Other convenience features include color temperature control, auto aspect ratio detection, closed captioning on mute, sleep timer, tri-lingual on-screen display, video input labeling, channel labeling, channel/video lock, and V-Chip parental controls.

This set has two stereo speakers that provide 10 watts of power per channel (for 20 watts of total power) and SRS WOW virtual surround sound. The StableSound feature maintains television volume within a preset range regardless of the source signal. This helps to eliminate the annoyance of normal program volume being followed immediately by extremely loud commercial messages or drastic volume fluctuations while changing channels.

Toshiba 56HM66 56" HD DLP Projection TV User Reivews

Review By  K. Martin December 31, 2006

We purchased the Toshiba 56" DLP 5 months ago and continue to be very happy with it. While the prices on all HD TV’s continue to come down, I am glad that we bit the bullet and got this one. The picture is just great.

Big factors in our purchase decision included size of screen, resolution, component inputs and outputs, built-in HD tuner, and long-term durability. We researched models online and took several trips to the local electronics discounters to touch and feel. Samsung was a close runner up for us - but Toshiba won out on more features for a similar price. (IMHO, Panasonic makes junk and Sony is overpriced).

For the price differential, we could not justify flat plasma or LCD screens. We did not see a difference in picture and do not care that the DLP TV cannot be flat-mounted on a wall. One additional caveat, if you are not going to get HD cable and/or an upconvert DVD or Blu-ray/HD DVD to use with this TV — save your money. There’s no reason paying for additional size, resolution and functionality you will not use.

This TV has multiple inputs and outpts for hook-ups to everything that we thought we would need, e.g., HDMI inputs for computer and game system, component HD inputs for cable box and DVD, optical input and output for sound, S-video, etc. etc. Make sure you think about this when comparing other TV’s. There’s nothing worse than not being able to expand your system when you need to!

The 56" screen is huge and the picture quality with a true HD feed is amazing. There is a little blurriness during fast scenes (the shadow effect other reviewers have talked about) — but not a big deal. Our cable system (cablevision) has about 20 HD channels including the major networks and a few movie channels. Unfortunately, much of the programming was not originally shot in HD, so even thought it is coming on a 1080p signal, the native resolution is still poor. PBS has the best HD programming - really incredible stuff, some of it shot for IMAX. The other standouts are sports programming, classic films transferred to HD and a few of the hotter new television programs. I hope more programming will come in the future.

We have a large DVD library and got an upconvert DVD. The picture is a little better, but not a spectacular difference. I am waiting to see whether Blu-ray or HD DVD wins the format war before making the investment in yet another machine and media.

One last point, this TV has a built-in HD tuner. This seemed like a big deal to me when I made my purchase. However, my cable box has an HD tuner and I’m not going back to antenna-only TV. So, why do I care that my TV has built-in HD? I don’t really. That was probably a waste of money. HD-ready would have been fine for me.

Hope this helps with your search. For what its worth, we are very happy with the Toshiba and would make this purchase again without hesitation.
