Systemax offers a solid performance desktop replacement for a very reasonable price with the Medallion XVII laptop. While it may not meet the extremely high end performance gaming notebooks offered by many companies, it performs strongly in just about any type of application. This review is based upon the base configuration of the Medallion XVII, but it is customizable to adjust a number of different components.
The base setup of the Medallion XVII features a fairly high end Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 dual core mobile processor. The drawback is that Systemax offers only 1GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory for the base configuration. With the Vista operating system this can reduce performance so it is recommended that users upgrade to a 2GB configuration.
Storage is a fairly average although a bit low on the base size hard drive. A 120GB hard drive is included in the base which is a bit on the small side. Of course, users can get larger drives for extra cost or reduce to a smaller drive to save money. All drives available run at a 5400rpm spin rate. A 8x dual layer DVD burner drive is standard.
Graphics wise the system comes with a very respectable GeForce 8600M GT 512MB graphics card. This is a very good graphics card that is capable of running 3D gamings. The drawback is that it is slightly underpowered for the higher resolution 17-inch display in the system for some games.
The biggest drawback to the Systemax Medallion XVII laptop is the support for it. The options for support are limited and require a fair bit of knowledge from the user. This may be good some some but problematic for others.
