Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Laptop Computer is a Great buy for Consumers
Reviewed by: Ethel Kay Merioles on Friday, August 1st, 2008
Most computer users can be hesitant in buying laptops because of the price. While some of the less hesitant would rather opt for an incredible bargain in the form of a refurbished notebook, others tend to lean toward the brand new.
After all, brand new means all the components are like the buns straight from the oven: fresh and untouched. The Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Laptop Computer is one great notebook that is capable and complete. It rallies the idea that great performance doesn’t have to come with a whopping price tag.
A Reliable, No-Nonsense Notebook from a Reliable Name
Looks-wise, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Laptop Computer is vastly different from the other notebooks in the current market today. This points to one thing: this computer is designed to set itself apart. And set itself apart, it does. The 6.4-pound marvel features an angled hinge design, seamless glossy display, and LED-backlit media buttons. The matte black chassis is very durable and a surprisingly clever design move. The textured weave pattern on the lid prevents it from slipping from your bag. Although it does not have a latch to hold the lid closed, the hinge mechanism works well and firmly holds the lid in place. Granted, the whole notebook can be a bit thick and heavy. But with the features it holds, this laptop more than compensates for its bulky appearance.
An Intel Pentium Dual-Core T2390 processor powers this notebook. It clocks in at a good 1.83 GHz with FSB speeds going up to 533 MHz. This processor boasts Enhanced Intel Speedstep® Technology and Intel® EM64T so it can process 64-bit data fast. That means power to multitask and handle the latest multi-threaded applications seamlessy. With 2GB of DDR2 memory already installed, you won’t have a problem with the Windows® Vista™ Home Premium OS. The 15.4″ WXGA glossy screen on this capable mobile computer offers sharp contrast, excellent color, and very even backlighting.
Enjoy 1280×800 pixel display with the excellent straight-on and horizontal viewing angles. Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 lets you avoid suffering from grainy images, ripples, and stuck pixels. To aid you further with your multimedia entertainment, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Laptop Computer is already equipped with a DVD Recordable optical drive, Dolby Home Theater premium audio with four speakers and a sub-woofer, and a Multimedia Control Center featuring the convenient Shuttle Key for instant volume and equalizer control.
If you’re concerned with security, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Laptop Computer has an integrated 1.3 megapixel camera that works with Lenovo’s unique VeriFace face recognition software. Now you can immediately access your notebook just by sitting in front of the screen. You can even lock the system once you’ve stepped away. A built-in power management application called “Energy Cut Tool” is located directly above the power button on the left side of the keyboard. This small button is labeled “Novo” and it allows you to choose between three different preset power options (high, medium, and low). This allows you to control your battery usage and even extend battery life when traveling. An ExpressCard/54 slot, three USB 2.0 ports, as well as other ports for devices like a modem or VGA help you with your work and play.
With all these features, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y510 Laptop Computer clearly proves that performance, entertainment, and security can be had at an average price. After all, blowing all your money on top quality equipment just to eventually get sub-par performance isn’t worth it.

I actually got the 1.73Ghz Y510 from tigerdirect outlet. I love it and was able to do whatever with it except didn’t try gaming. However I got rid of all the funky partitions and put XP on it since it only had 2GB of RAM. Then when I saw the 2.4 Penryn Mobile processor at the outlet I decided to upgrade the CPU and also increased the RAM to 4GB. When I did this I went back to Vista as this configuration does just fine with it. Too bad can’t upgrade the GPU, but from what I’ve read that’s not possible with integrated graphics on the MB. Would probable have to replace the MB to put a graphics card in this particular Y510 model and then you might as well just buy a new laptop.

Okay, I am not going to lie, there are better laptops in terms of performance out there for lesser price. New? I think not. Most of them are refurbished and if you purchase one of those Gateway refurbished laptop for about $100 less, not only do you get stuck with 3-month warranty, but you miss out on the veriface technology as well as the superb Dolby surround-sound system with a subwoofer. It is fast enough that unless you are a hardcore gamer, it will handle any tasks you throw at it simultaneously. By the way, the design is also better than its Gateway competitor as well. When I went to TigerDirect, I debated for hours, but I eventually stuck with the Lenovo for its features, quality, and price.

I have had my 510 for over 3 months now and it continues to impress me. I have it set up as a dual boot with Vista and Unbuntu Linux. This laptop has a great keyboard and the onboard sound is very good. The Y510 laptop is an incredible bargain, but don’t take my word for it read what PC World had to say when it rated it as #2 in the Best 10 all-purpose laptops on the market. The face recognition takes a little getting used to as it is sensitive to the surrounding light levels and the angle of the screen. It saves key strokes.

This is a Mickey Mouse computer. The day I bought it, I brought it back to disconnect the veriface security. This tecnology is far from perfected. The dvd burner is also Mickey Mouse quality. The day I bought this computer I had to buy copy software to replace the poor quality burner that comes with this computer. I am very disapointed with this over priced computer.

Owned this laptop for approximately 10 days now and have to say that I am very pleased. I did extensive research for a durable laptop that offered a pretty good rebate ($150 rebate with this purchase)and met my needs for web browsing, security features, user friendly features, and school work. I’ll take this laptop over my wife’s Dell 1520 any day. Consider this laptop before you purchase a higher priced product offering similar features. My research paid off and yet again, TigerDirect delivered a quality product on time

This laptop has some drawbacks - 1. Notebook gets heated on left side of touchpad. Calldd customer service and sent my just one month old laptop to service depot. As per service depot, heating is normal for this laptop. 2. Speakers are goog but not great. I have my other Compaq Presario with just 2 stereo spakers that gives better performance than this laptop. 3.Battery life better than other laptops though. I am not very satisfied with laptop as there are several bettr laptops fro DELL & HP available within this price range and similar configuration.

For those who are contemplating buying this laptop I have two words: BUY IT! Lenovo Y series is going to go a looong way in consumer market laptop branch. It just needs a little marketing and ads push. Ideapads are actually capable of creating a cultural hive similar to the mac user culture… competitors are going to have sleepless nights figuring out how to beat this one! (especially the Y510 Core 2 Duo model). Untill they find a way around it I’m gonna enjoy this jewel

Has worked very well so far. The veriface feature works well but, make sure you have the screen at a slighty more obtuse angle than acute. It seems to read better when its at about 100 degrees rather than 90 degrees(hopefully that doesnt confuse anyone). But the screen is very very clear and crisp ,and it runs quick to have vista on it. Doesnt come with alot of ”bloatware”(programs that slow down the computer). And it even comes with a touchscreen panel at the top underneath the screen. All in all a great computer for the price. I would recommend it to anybody.

I have owned a couple of other laptops (Dell, Gateway) but this Lenovo IdeaPad out-performs the ones I peviously owned. I did quite a bit of research on this particular model prior to purchasing it so I expected it to perform as it does. I feel that it’s the best 15.4” laptop out there.

For having the laptop for 1 month, I love the experience with it. The laptop has very good looking in appearance. The booting time on Vista is just acceptable. However, all programs go smoothly once the OS is up & running(thank for 2GB RAMs). The overall performance has been great during the period of my ownership. I will recommend it to anyone seeking for a $600 lappy.
