Cold calling is a method used to advertise certain products with the use of a telephone. This is an initial interaction between a prospect and a representative of a product being advertised, initiated by the latter while the former is mostly uninformed hence the term cold calling. This method is a variation of the door to door selling only without having to personally come face to face with a customer and preceded online selling.

Over the years, cold calling has been heavily criticized by consumers and sales reps of a company as both irritating and frustrating to both parties respectively. Consumers feel irritated by callers as they generally expect to hear the voice of someone they know when they pick up the phone, only to be disappointed and be forced to listen to somebody make a sales pitch. This is in fact understandable as most people like to guard their privacy. This is frustrating for a representative as they are mostly ridiculed by people they don’t even know while only trying to do their jobs. This however does not mean it cannot be one of the more effective ways to increase sales.

While it is true that cold calling can be one of the more difficult techniques to master for a salesman. There are always pointers to make the job of talking to a guy you don’t even know while trying to increase your sales easier and eventually work. Persuasion will play a vital role in deciding whether you make or brake the sale as you will eventually need to throw everything but or, God forbid, including the kitchen sink at some people. While this will greatly affect on how your deal works out, other factors will play out and might even have a bigger effect on the customer’s decision whether to buy or decline the offer.

There is a saying that smiling and keeping a prospective attitude on the phone while talking to a customer paves the way for a gentle transaction. Although sometimes met with skepticism, this is entirely true as your mood determines the tone of your voice which the customer will have to listen to as you try to make a sale. Obviously proper courtesy will have to be observed while in conversation. This reflects your sincerity, and the way the company who sells the product handles their customers.

It is always important to connect with people to build relationships. This is also true in business as a company gets bigger. Relationship need to be formed to ensure success. This can also be done through it by showing concern and establishing rapport with consumers. This is a full proof method in gaining the trust of the public thus increasing your sales ultimately spelling success for you and the company.

To sum up, this method can be a hard and arduous method to increase sales. However, it can be the driving force in a company’s success if and when done the right way. One can never underestimate the effectiveness of this method as it remains one of the key elements in building business.
