Acer Aspire 5920-6954 Notebook PC: Bargain Notebook Buy
By John Gawley on March 19th, 2008
For affordable graphics, gaming, Hi-Def movies and more it’s hard to beat the Acer Aspire 5920-6954 Laptop Computer. Voted one of PC magazine’s “Best Laptop Buys” for under a thousand dollars, it boasts everything you’d expect, plus a few extras you don’t expect to see in an affordable laptop. For one, it has a dedicated graphics department, in the form of an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS with 256MB of memory. Which I suppose makes it less of a surprise that the Aspire 5920 also has an HDMI output for use with high definition displays. But it’s still nice to see.
The Acer Aspire 5920-6954 runs a 1.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 processor. It also has an impressive 2GB of DDR2 memory. It is important to note that the design of this laptop was conceived before the fall of Toshiba’s HD DVD advanced definition disc format. Thus, the neat but untimely inclusion of the HD DVD ROM drive. There is a silver lining to be gleaned from this new-dinosaur technology: The inclusion of an HDMI output on the Aspire 5920. HDMI (as most of you already know) is the all-digital connection technology favored by nearly all High-Definition display devices. It’s capable of transferring a signal as complex as the mighty 1080p, the standard by which Blu-ray and the late HD DVD were judged.
This means that you can use any HD display (LCD TVs, Plasma TVs, and Digital Rear Projection televisions) to enjoy your high definition content. In fact, it allows you to use your television as a larger than life screen for your laptop. It’s true, the Aspire 5920 also has a VGA output, but that’ll only work if you’re using a television screen with a VGA output or a computer monitor that doesn’t utilize DVI. All in all, the HDMI output is a much more usable connection than the VGA (in my opinion) if you’re looking for a massive screen projection. After all, this Acer’s screen is 15.4 inches diagonal, and most of us don’t own a computer monitor over 22 inches diagonal. The VGA option just won’t make that much of a difference.
Although aesthetics is mostly Apple Inc.’s sole domain, I’ve always been impressed by the Acers that come through the TigerTV labs. They don’t look like your average black-slab machines you’re used to seeing from the windows cadre, and they don’t cost as much as a similarly equipped Sony VIAO (the hands down winner in visually pleasing design in my opinion) notebook. The keyboard area is bone-white while the back of the laptop is a smooth and glossy black.
I’m not going to bore you with too many specific details about the Acer Aspire 5920-6954…oh! It’s got a subwoofer! Does your laptop have a subwoofer? I didn’t think so! This brings me back to my high-school days, with stereo systems louder than hell and probably worth more than the rust buckets we drove to school every morning…good times. Anyway, if you want to know more about this affordable Acer that’s nicely equipped for under a grand, click the link below.

This is a great laptop at a great price! Other major stores are selling nearly identical models of this laptop for $999.99. As usual Tiger offers some of the best deals on the internet! The amount of features on this laptop for this price are insane! The feature that stands out among the rest though is the fact that there is a dedicated GeForce 8600M GS installed. The card is good enough to play most DirectX 9 games at higher settings. So it definitely makes for a decent mid-range gaming laptop. Not to mention the HDMI port that’s supplied by this card as well as the fact that a high quality card like this is perfect for HD acceleration. And though it didn’t win the war, it comes with an HD DVD drive. Considering these movies can be had cheap, it’s still a nice feature. As if that wasn’t enough, the fact that it is a Centrino product makes everything just that much sweeter. I’ve drained the entire battery for a total of four hours of battery life.
