Get Your Head In The Game…5 Tips, Tricks and Kicks in the Butt to Get You Motivated For Fat Loss Success!
So when you know exactly what you need to do with your training and eating, yet you STILL aren’t getting the fat-loss results you want, what’s left?
MINDSET. It’s all in your head at that point.
I can’t tell you how many people I know who really do know EXACTLY what they need to do in order to achieve their goals (in just about anything, not just fat loss) but have yet to put any of those things into practice.
I’ve got 5 tips, tricks and kicks in the butt to help keep YOU from falling victim to inaction!
Tip #1. Ask a Simple Question…"So What’s STOPPING You From Succeeding in Your Fat-Loss Efforts?"
That’s always the VERY first question I ask somebody who asks me why it’s so hard for them to lose fat.
What’s stopping you…
Three simple words that have a LOT of power when you analyze them. Because these three words immediately get you thinking, "what IS stopping me?"
And once I can see the wheels start turning, I follow up by saying "now write them all down".
And the power in THIS simple technique is the NEXT big step towards fat-loss success.
Because once you start writing down the things that are stopping you and holding you back from success, you remove a lot of the power they hold over you. These things aren’t so big and scary when they’re just a few words on a piece of paper.
You know what I’m talking about…it could be family obligations, job stress, lack of time, you name it…there are PLENTY of reasons (and excuses!) people have to let their body and health go by the wayside!
So time for the FINAL step…the next thing I say is "now for each thing that’s stopping you, write down a SOLUTION…a way around what’s stopping you."
This is the REALLY tough part for a lot of people - it forces them to confront HEAD ON the reasons that they’re not succeeding and makes them take away their own excuses.
THAT is a very powerful thing. It’s one thing for me to tell you what to do…it’s much more powerful for you to think of it yourself.
Think you don’t have time during the day? Maybe there are some days you don’t but that doesn’t happen EVERY day. Even if you have 5 minutes a couple of times a day, that’s enough time to do quick workouts and accomplish something.
Think it’s too time-consuming to eat healthy? How much time does it take to eat like garbage? About the same amount! And how much time are you going to be spending in the hospital bed when you have a heart attack from living on French Fries and beer? You can watch all the TV you want then…
Tip #2 - Overcome Your Personal Inertia
NOW is the time to do something. ANYTHING. Not next Monday. NOW. I don’t care if it’s eating an apple instead of a bag of chips - that’s SOMETHING. It only takes a single shifting rock to start a landslide!
There is no and never WILL be a perfect time to start. If you wait for that perfect time, you’ll end up never starting. If you want to start on a Monday, for mental housekeeping, fine. Just do a little something today to get warmed-up.
Want to have a big "last-hurrah" meal before you embark? No problem. Just don’t do it again NEXT week, too.
Just like the greatest inventions that never get off the drawing board, nothing happens until you DO something. Doesn’t even matter if it turns out to be completely wrong - at least you took action, TRIED and then LEARNED something from it so you can get closer to success next time.
Tip #3 - Don’t Be Afraid To Be Exceptional and Don’t Care What Other People Think
There’s an old saying, the nail that sticks out gets pounded down. Unfortunately, this can be TOTALLY true when it comes to fat loss. The moment you start trying to make yourself better, it seems people go out of their way to shut you down.
Sound familiar?
It seems the only way for them to feel good about themselves is if everybody else is just as out-of-shape and unhealthy as they are. Then they don’t feel so bad about themselves and don’t have to do anything about their own lack of effort.
But here’s the thing…that is THEIR monkey on THEIR back. Not yours. Say to yourself now… "not my monkey." Say it again when somebody you know and/or love tries to make you feel bad about eating healthy.
This is a huge step and can be extremely tough but you have to mentally separate yourself from seeking the approval of others for your eating and exercise behavior.
I know it’s fashionable to say being overweight is not your fault (especially when it’s immediately followed by a sales pitch for a supplement that’ll fix it!). It’s job stress…it’s genetics…it’s the convenient fast food. And hey, in some cases it MAY be genetic.
But for the VAST majority of people, I’m sorry to say it IS their fault. Oh, that gun to your head must have been scary when you were forced to reach for the box of donuts by your sadistic co-workers, who then forced you to eat 3 pieces of birthday cake 4 days in a row.
And believe me, I KNOW it’s hard to resist poor food choices…not only from taste but from social pressure. I once had a long discussion with somebody who told me that my not drinking alcohol at a party made them feel self-conscious about their own drinking.
Guess what…not my monkey. I’m not going to drink just to make you feel better about yourself.
The moment you stop seeking approval for your behavior and stop caring so much about what other people think, you’re on the right track!
You don’t have to make other people feel bad because they aren’t eating perfect - a simple "no, thank you" is just fine. But don’t feel like you have to eat junk or be fat just to "fit in".
Here’s the funny thing…one thing I’ve noticed is that most people are so caught up in worrying about what OTHER people think of them that they don’t realize that THOSE other people are just as caught up worrying about what YOU think of them!
Break the cycle…don’t live your life based on other people’s anxieties. Be exceptional.
Tip #4 - Sometimes It’s a Grind - Make It Your JOB to Succeed.
Fat loss isn’t always easy or fun. Sometimes, it IS a grind. You don’t feel like eating right. You don’t feel like training. You just want to go lie down.
Here’s how to get by that. Just do it. Don’t think about it. THAT is what will kill you. When you don’t feel like going to work, but you know you have to because you have to feed your family, what do you do? You get up and go to work.
Don’t be any different with fat loss.
I’m all in favor of having fun with training. That’s why I come up with new exercises and training techniques constantly! But sometimes, it’s NOT fun even for me. But I go down to my basement and just DO it because it’s my JOB.
Do you think every Olympian on the medal podium in Beijing WANTED to train every day? Of course not! Sometimes, they feel like sleeping in and skipping workouts.
But the REAL champions don’t do this. Not every workout is going to be a great one or set a personal best. That just doesn’t happen. But you just need to put in the work. The results will happen.
It’s VERY important to have fun with your training. The moment things get tough, if it’s your JOB, you’ll get up and do it anyway. I’ve had some of my very BEST workouts on days where I didn’t even feeling like training.
So just do it.
Tip #5 - Have a PLAN and Don’t Give Yourself a Choice
You have to be a dictatorship with yourself, not a democracy. When your stomach gets a vote, it’ll often overrule your brain…
When you have a plan, DO NOT give yourself a choice. When the plan calls for a specific workout, you DO that workout. When the plan calls for eating spinach, you eat spinach. Not cheeseburgers.
Your plan should be set in stone and that’s just the way it is. When your stomach says, "why can’t I eat that chocolate cake?" Your brain should say, "Because I told you so."
If you’re at a party, set up your plan. Say, "I can have two sweet things then I’m hogging the vegetable tray." Set in stone. No deviations.
Got a special occasion coming up where you KNOW there won’t be any healthy food? PLAN for it. It doesn’t happen by accident. It’s part of the plan and you plan for how to account for it.
The moment you give yourself a choice, you open up the possibility of making the WRONG one.
CONCLUSION:
Getting on track and staying on track takes real mental effort but the results are definitely worth it! Hopefully, these 5 tips can help give you a kick in the butt in the right direction.
